Hormones & Body
Chemical messengers of the body
Your body whispers to itself in molecules. Insulin tells cells to take in sugar. Testosterone and estrogen shape you. Cortisol turns stress into action. Oxytocin binds mother to child. All travel in vanishingly small concentrations β a few micrograms per liter of blood is enough to change behavior, mood, metabolism, fertility. This collection covers the endogenous hormones and their pharmaceutical mimics, antagonists, and replacements: HRT, birth control, anabolic steroids, thyroid drugs. Many were the first molecules synthesized for purposes beyond medicine β gender, performance, longevity.
Featured
Cortisol
The stress glucocorticoid. Its diurnal curve peaks at dawn and bottoms at midnight; chronic HPA-axis dysregulation is tied to depression, central obesity, and hippocampal atrophy.
Dexamethasone
A potent glucocorticoid. The 2020 RECOVERY trial showed it cut mortality by one-third in ventilated COVID patients β the first cheap, generic drug proven to actually save pandemic lives.
Estradiol
The dominant estrogen (E2). It inspired the first oral contraceptive Enovid in 1960 and now anchors HRT, gender-affirming care, and IVF protocols worldwide.
Insulin
Discovered at the University of Toronto in 1921. Turned a death sentence into a chronic condition β Banting sold the patent for $1, saying 'insulin belongs to the world.'
Testosterone
The dominant androgen. Butenandt and Ruzicka synthesized it independently in 1935 (sharing the 1939 Nobel). Doping cases from Lance Armstrong to the BALCO scandal trace straight back to this steroid.

C257H383N65O77S6 Insulin: The Patent Sold for a Dollar
Before 1922, a child with type-1 diabetes had a life expectancy measured in months. After 1922, that life became 60 years longer. The molecule responsible was discovered by a surgeon who'd never run a lab β and its patent was sold for a single dollar.
C21H30O5 Cortisol: The Hormone You Make Every Morning at 7 AM
Roughly 30 minutes before you wake up, your adrenal glands flood your bloodstream with the molecule that runs your stress response. Done in moderation, this is healthy. Done all day every day, it shrinks your hippocampus.
