Your brain runs on chemistry. Every thought, mood, memory, and craving traces back to a few dozen small molecules ricocheting between neurons. Dopamine fires when you're rewarded. Serotonin tunes your floor. GABA stops the noise. Drugs that hijack this system β LSD, ketamine, caffeine, SSRIs β work by mimicking, blocking, or amplifying these natural signals. This collection covers the molecules that make you you, and the ones that change you: neurotransmitters, psychedelics, antidepressants, opioids, anesthetics. Most are gram-scale doses. All are humanity's slowest, strangest dialogue with itself.

Acetylcholine
Otto Loewi proved chemical synapses exist with it in 1921 β a dream-inspired frog-heart experiment. It runs the neuromuscular junction, the parasympathetic system, and memory; Alzheimer's first kills basal-forebrain cholinergic neurons.
Adrenaline (epinephrine)
The chemistry of fight-or-flight. Jokichi Takamine isolated it in 1901 β the first hormone ever purified. One EpiPen jab can reverse anaphylactic shock in 30 seconds.
Alprazolam
Xanax β fast onset, short half-life, brutal rebound. That's why it became Gen Z's anxiety drug of choice, name-dropped by Future, Lil Peep, and the entire SoundCloud rap scene.
Amphetamine
The 'pep pill' both sides handed out in WWII β German Pervitin and Allied Benzedrine were the same molecule. Today's Adderall and ADHD prescriptions are direct descendants.
Caffeine
The molecule that fueled the industrial revolution. Two billion daily doses worldwide β it doesn't make you alert, it just blocks adenosine's 'tired' signal.
Cannabidiol (CBD)
The cannabis molecule that doesn't get you high. In 2018 the FDA approved Epidiolex (purified CBD) for childhood Dravet syndrome β the first plant-derived cannabis drug ever prescribed.
Chloroform
James Simpson introduced it for obstetric anesthesia in 1847. When Queen Victoria inhaled it during her eighth childbirth in 1853, the religious objection that women must suffer in labor collapsed overnight.
Cocaine
The original 1886 Coca-Cola really contained it. It blocks the dopamine transporter, leaving reward signals stranded in the synapse. Freud once recommended it enthusiastically.
