Drugs that changed how long we live
Before 1928, a scratched knee could kill you. Penicillin changed that β and started a 90-year cascade of molecules that doubled human life expectancy. Antibiotics, antivirals, vaccines, statins, insulin, cancer immunotherapy: every breakthrough is a specific atomic arrangement, designed or stumbled upon. Artemisinin

Bayer's Felix Hoffmann acetylated salicylic acid from willow bark in 1897. Low-dose (81 mg) aspirin is still the bedrock of secondary heart-attack prevention more than a century later.
Atorvastatin
Sold as Lipitor β the world's best-selling drug from 2003 to 2012, with cumulative sales over $150 billion. It remains the single most lucrative prescription drug ever made.
Chloroform
James Simpson introduced it for obstetric anesthesia in 1847. When Queen Victoria inhaled it during her eighth childbirth in 1853, the religious objection that women must suffer in labor collapsed overnight.
Diazepam
Hoffmann-La Roche launched it as Valium in 1963. From 1969 to 1982 it was the most-prescribed drug in America β the Rolling Stones immortalized it in 'Mother's Little Helper.'
Diethyl ether
On October 16, 1846, William Morton publicly demonstrated ether anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital. Surgery and screaming parted ways that day β modern anesthesia's birthday.
Fentanyl
A hundred times stronger than morphine. In 2022 it killed more than 200 Americans every day β more than car crashes and gun deaths combined. Janssen first synthesized it in the 1960s as a surgical anesthetic.
