What plants made first
Before modern pharma, every drug came from a plant, a fungus, or a microbe. Aspirin from willow bark. Morphine from opium poppy. Quinine from the cinchona tree — the reason the British could colonize India. Tu Youyou's artemisinin, found in a 4th-century Chinese herbal, saves a million African lives a year. This collection covers natural products and traditional medicines: alkaloids, terpenes, glycosides, the molecules in Chinese ginseng, Indian turmeric, peyote, ayahuasca. Many remain irreplaceable — synthesis labs still can't beat what evolution figured out in a fungus.

Artemisinin
Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel for it. A line in Ge Hong's 4th-century Chinese pharmacopoeia — 'a handful of qinghao, soaked in water' — told her to switch to low-temperature ether extraction. The endoperoxide bridge is what kills the malaria parasite.
Quinine
The cinchona-bark antimalarial that made British colonization of India possible — soldiers stopped dying of malaria. After the 1857 mutiny, officers mixed quinine tonic with gin to mask the bitterness, and the G&T was born.
