Molecules that kill
Nature got there first. Botulinum toxin, ricin, tetrodotoxin, batrachotoxin — these are evolution's millennia of refinement, each molecule weighing micrograms but killing in minutes. Humans added our own: sarin, VX, novichok, Agent Orange. This collection is half forensic, half geopolitical: the molecule Socrates drank, the polonium that killed Litvinenko, the dioxin that disfigured Yushchenko, the thallium that crippled Zhu Ling. Studying poisons is studying biochemistry under hostile conditions — and they're often one tweak away from medicine.
